What is a Transition?
In a nutshell, a transition is an effect used to connect two separate shots. Basically, they are the creative glue that holds the shots together.
Transitions come in all shapes and styles to add movement. For instance, switching topics, changing locations, collapsing time, shifting moods, drawing contrasts, and enhancing drama.
Depending on your intention, transitions can be used in a variety of ways. Some create a flow, carrying the viewer through an experience seamlessly. While others ramp up the intensity.

How To Apply Transitions in DaVinci Resolve
Luckily, bringing these free DaVinci Resolve transitions into your timeline is a quick and easy process. Follow the steps below to get started.
- In DaVinci Resolve go to the Edit Tab.
- Locate the two clips or shots that you want to connect with a transition.
- Navigate to the Effects tab, then go to the Transitions panel.
- Browse through the available transitions and select the one that you want to use. You can also use the search window if you know the name. Preview each transition by placing your play head over the clip, then hover your mouse over the transition in the effects tab.
- Drag the transition from the Transitions panel and drop it between the two clips in the timeline. You can click between the two clips (it will highlight green) then right-click on the transition you want, and choose “Add Transition” from the contextual menu.
- Adjust the length of the transition by dragging the edges of the transition handle in the timeline.
- If the transition includes adjustable parameters, you can fine-tune the effect by clicking on the transition and using the controls in the Inspector panel on the right side of the interface.
Point to remember, if your transition is not positioning itself where you want it, chances are the clip does not have enough room on the beginning or end sufficient for the transition.
Tips for Using Free DaVinci Resolve Transitions
Not sure where to start? Here are our 4 top tips to consider when adding transitions to your projects.
1. Choose a Style
From a continuity point of view, avoid mixing too many styles. You want the audience to focus on the content, not the transitions, so choose a style and stick to it. They are not meant to engage the audience, not distract them.
2. Customize Transitions
Remember, simply adding the transition is not the end of the process. To really polish the look, adjust the colors, effects, and timing.
3. Add Sound FX
For additional impact, add sound effects to your transitions. These can be whoosh sounds or even a car door slamming. This is the place to be very creative. It’s fun to explore ways to marry sound design to visuals. If you’re using a music track, transitions work well when placed on a downbeat.
4. Build a Library
DaVinci Resolve transitions are great tools to have on hand, so it’s a good idea to stay organized and save your templates, to use again.
Why not download more free Davinci Resolve transitions and build your own library to save time? Once installed, you’ll be able to use them in all your projects. 🙌
