Newman, 96, a founder of Lincoln Finance Corp. in Minneapolis, who pioneered automobile lending in Minnesota, died Tuesday at Metropolitan-Mount Sinai Medical Center in Minneapolis. Newman formed the finance company in 1919 in the old New York Life Building at 401 2nd Av.

S. It was first company to ever lend money on automobiles in the state of Minnesota," said Newman's son, Charles, of Scottsdale, Ariz. "He pioneered automobile lending until the banks took it over in the mid- to late 1940s. Basically the banks didn't want to get involved with anything that walked or moved." Newman also helped write laws pertaining to conditional sales contracts and chattel mortgages on automobiles, his son said. Also noted Irene Field, 59, best known for her role in the television series "Flash Gordon," died Tuesday in Greenwich, after a long illness.

Field, whose stage name was Irene Champlin, played Dale Arden in the 1953-54 5 syndicated television series. She also acted television's "The Verdict is Yours," "From These Roots" and "Guiding Light." Newman bought and sold commercial and apartment buildings in the Twin Cities for more than 40 years. He was active in the company until his death. "Whenever we'd drive by something, (he'd say) 'I used to own this, I used to own said his wife, Gertrude. Newman was born in Poland and came to the United States "with a nickel in his pocket" when he was 12 or 13, years old, his son said. He served in the Army during World War I and was the only man in his platoon of 18 or 20 men to survive the flu epidemic in 1918.

(Beaty) Hanson, 77, a civic leader, educator and religious leader in Benson, died of a heart attack Sunday at the Swift County-Benson Hospital. Hanson formed the Swift CountyBenson Hospital Auxiliary in 1949- 50 and headed a committee that raised more than $60,000 to equip the new hospital.

She visited more than 70 other communities in Minnesota and other Midwestern states to help them set up auxiliaries and fund-raising drives. For 20 years, she was a special lecturer at the University of Minnesota's program in hospital administration. She also was a past president of the Minnesota Hospital Association Auxiliary and a state counsellor for the American Hospital Association.
